When a wine is described as spicy it means the win
When a wine is described as spicy it means the wine shows aromas and flavours of spices such as back or white pepper, cinnamon, cardamom, star anise, cloves, ginger, juniper or coriander seed (to name a few).

Many people pick up pepper in Shiraz, ginger in Gewurztraminer or star anise in Zinfandel/Primativo for example.

Many of the spice aromas and flavours we pick up are due to oak influence or other winemaking influences but are also characteristics that come from the grape variety itself.

Back in 2008, an agreement was signed between the Europen Union and Australia to phase out the use of European names on Australian wines (Port, Champagne, Chablis, Hermitage etc.)

The search for replacement names for Australian-made sherry and tokay took 10 months and 1 million dollars. These were the finalists:
SHERRY: Solzay, Solperi, Aperire, Alphrette
TOKAY: Millifera, Russet, Muscadelle, Allirea

But the winners were Apera, a play on aperitif, and topaque chosen because it sounded refined.
